WHAT IS RAC?
RAC stands for Ride-A-Curly.
As a way to encourage Curly owners to get out and promote the breed, build a consistent 'riding ethic' and also inspire others, I decided to start a contest via Curly Horse Country, called RIDE-A-CURLY back in 2007. It was so successful, I decided to keep it going; expanding & improving along the way.
Each entry receives a FREE t-shirt which encourages the "team spirit" of promoting around the globe.
RAC is the first of it's kind in that the focus was on working as a "TEAM" of promoters, inspiring each other and just having fun, rather than the "win." --- But like any contest, it is always fun to set some goals and have that ultimate prize as the driving force. ;-)
As a way to network, the contest encourages public blogging as well. Riders that wish to remain anonymous can do that, but public socializing is recommended.

I thought the Free T-shirt would be fun because they will inspire you and encourage people to ask about your Curly that you will be riding....and help promote the breed!! Plus, with all the Ride-A-Curly participants wearing one, it will give you that TEAM spirit!
Just like years past, I encourage all RACers to post their adventures, stories and accomplishments on the RAC blog. Each participant will receive an invite to join the blog on January 1st. You can share anything you wish along the way. Anyone can send pictures, stories or articles about their adventures to be posted on Curly Horse Country! It would be really fun for CHC readers to see you out and about with your Curly T-shirts showing what our curlies can do, AROUND THE WORLD! Wouldn't that be neat to read stories from every part of the world doing the same thing?
I ask that everyone document with total honesty so this contest can be fair and good. Remember, GO HAVE FUN and talk about your INCREDIBLE CURLY HORSE!!! It is the icing on the cake if you win a prize at the end of it all. Right? Enjoy and PLEASE keep me posted on how it is going....we will all be waiting, watching and cheering you on!!

WHAT IS THE CORE DIVISION?
This is the crux of the Ride-A-Curly Program. Encouraging RIDING and PROMOTING.
Points will be tallied TWO ways:
A. FOUR points for every hour ridden, either on the trail, arena or driving!
These points are based on the Participant's time (you the rider), and you can ride as many curlies as you wish! (unless you are in the "curly team" division)
B. 20 points for each event. ie Parade, Clinic or Show
You receive 20 points per event where you take at least one curly with you. If you take 2 curlies, you still get just 20 points. The points are based on the rider, not on the horses present. An event is any activity that enables you to promote your curlies. If your barn is holding a public clinic and your curly is participating, by all means, count that event. How grand that you can promote without hauling somewhere! If you do a fundraiser trail ride and there is an opportunity to promote your curly, again you get 20 points. For events that are more than 1 day - you receive 20 points for 1st day and 10 additional points for each consecutive day after that. Keep in mind that this contest is unique in that it isn't all about the "win" - it's about setting personal goals, feeling part of a community & inspiring each other and of course, promoting our curlies, TOGETHER. The prizes should be the icing on the cake, not the cake. ;-) This contest will help you build riding ethic with logging and become more aware of opportunities to promote your curlies. I heard it once said that sometimes it's not the goal that is the prize, but the adventure you take in getting there.
*Please note: You can not count points for giving lessons on your curly. You can not count training a curly if you are getting paid. This contest is targeting NON-Professionals.

SPECIAL NOTE TO CURLY BREEDERS
This contest is great way to promote your farm/horses and at the same time get your horses ridden. If you don't have time yourselves, it is acceptable for have someone else ride your horses for you. You may have a horse savvy young person around that would love to participate in the contest, but they don't own a curly. You pay their entry fee and they get to ride, log points and win great prizes! This would be a win-win for both of you -- your horses get ridden and the rider can enjoy and have fun! ;-) Also, what is also cool is that via the RAC Adventures page, they can share as much as they want - and I would gladly include a link to your farm with the post. Pretty nifty, eh? Maybe it is a horse you plan to sell eventually, what a great way to promote that horse and get it in the public eye and also show what a special curly he/she is! --- I really want to do what I can to help Quality Curly Breeders out there as much as I can. AND also remember that the idea is to get out and promote the breed, so although arena time is fine, it is important to advance to public outings, shows, trail etc., to do this.

Comments from past & present RAC participants:
"The contest, while way out of reach for me to win, helped me feel part of a bigger community. Because my curly is the only one I know of in my area, I really liked having the t-shirt to wear anytime anyone would see her, or just for my own joy. It also motivated me to spend more time ON her, take her more places and get her more involved. She has made a lot of friends this year and nobody thinks of her as an appy - they KNOW she's a curly and she's special." Teresa Ruth Miss Prairie Dawn Oasis, Idaho
"Being part of a cyberspace horse group was awesome!! I loved reading the RAC blog and also enjoyed sharing my experiences with other RACers." Carol B.
"My Curly gelding Sage is boarded at a very small barn in a rural area, and is the only Curly in our part of the state. Participating in the 2008 RAC contest gave me a great sense of Curly community and really helped motivate me to get out there and ride Sage on a regular basis. It was great to have to RAC blog page where I could go read about what everyone else was up to with their Curlies, and that definitely encouraged me to get out there more." Brie
"What I loved best about the RAC was the community, it was fun to see what everyone else was doing and to be inspired by each other. Besides, its always nice to be rewarded for something you're going to be doing anyway!" Cara
"RAC helped keep me thinking about training my horses in the forefront of my brain. I have found myself to be a very competitive person, RAC gives me a chance to compete, and to reach personal goals! Thank you RAC !!" Linda
"I just find being able to start to the year with a new contest, really helps motivate me. Reminds me that ultimately.I love to ride and just have to remember to put the manure fork down and just ride!!!! The mini contests throughout this past year had some great ideas to try new things with our horses. Loved it!!!" Trish
"The RAC has been an inspiration. Where else can you compete against each other while simultaneously cheering each other on, and sharing in our triumphs, and commiserating on our setbacks? And its our Curlies that bring us all together." Michelle |
