MONTH #6 - OCTOBER
Note from Meredith's Mom, Kim: Sorry we didn't post pics and blog, I had a baby in August and she took up most of my time. But, that didn't slow Meredith down! She had her Grandpa and Step Dad to help her. She graduated from riding in the round pen to going on trail rides! She also took Curly Sioux to school as her Show and Tell Pet! The kids got a big kick out of that.

| Note from Cara: Sunny and I had a blast at the Curly show on Saturday. I couldn't have asked for more from Sunny, he did great. It was SO hot though. I am still a little disappointed that I didn't enter him in the Curly coat class, because Sunny had one of the curliest coats this year! Last year he was the smoothest coated, but this year most of the curlies were still totally slick. He is beginning to wave all along his neck and back. He did awesome in the riding classes. I had come prepared, remembering how bored and slow he got last year, so I borrowed a pair of spurs and wore them for the second time in my life. They kept him pretty motivated. We placed in 5 out of six riding classes; 1 sixth, three fifths, and one fourth, but I was mostly happy about how well he was doing at listening to me so I wasn't even paying too much attention to our placings. My favorite riding class moment was the junior horse pleasure, the only canter class I entered him in. I was SO thrilled, because I hadn't been working on his canter all summer, had just been having fun and not concentrating on training really at all like I should have. I had worked with him at the fairgrounds the day before, right by the busy highway, and got him into a nice canter but was still feeling nervous about the class. Jeff convinced me not to scratch by reminding me, "what's the worst that could happen? No canter? so what, he's still got a long time to be a polished horse. go in there and have fun" So I did, and we did. I got him to canter both ways, and he was on the correct lead both times through no effort of mine. I have a hard time watching other riders while I am working, so I'm not sure what happened, but even with our unpolished performance we didn't place last.
Ok, and the icing on the show day was the last class. Bribe your horse. We had not practiced it at home, and I had no idea what would happen. The worst case scenario would be that he would just stand there and go "huh?" but I figured it was worth a shot. Now I cannot tell exactly what happened, but from what I was told I can sort of recreate it. I went in there with a borrowed bucket, and that made Sunny really curious. I was trying to unclip his lead rope so that we were as close to the starting cone as possible, but he was having none of it. He kept circling around me trying to get his nose into the bucket. So I gave up and started running, and to my surprise he was following close behind, so I gave everything my overheated body had, and heard him snorting behind me as he closed in on the bucket. Apperently he didn't approve of the way I was keeping the bucket away from him, because he threw a couple of annoyed bucks in (or so I was told) we crossed the finish line right next to each other, and Sunny refused to leave the arena until he got some feed out of that bucket! After the class he kept trying to hone in on the other promising looking buckets that people were holding. I had to take him back to the trailer and watch the rest of the class from there! To make a long story short, Bruce kept his reigning title as the champion, but Sunny and I came in a close second! So that was the second place ribbon. Everyone kept commenting on how well Sunny was doing and how cute he was... methinks he got a rather large head! |

Note from Sophie: Some good news for RAC ! I was at a big western show the last sunday with Tony and Dotsy. Around 5000 people to see QH, Appaloosas and Curlies ! We had 4 shows in saddle, 2 with the both curlies and 2 with Tony alone. My friends Emmanuelle, Martine and Elise was comming to help me and spoke about the curly bred. We had a stand too, busy busy ! Dotsy was very wise and Emmanuelle loved to ride him. I lended just one time Tony to Elise, but it was not awesome. Tony has a strong mind and i think he can make a large effort for shows but it's just for me ! Special horse... I rode him just before the barrel race and i was very tempted with ! Tony was ready ! But i had my english saddle... The next year we will, sure ! At home i don't ride every day but make long trails time to time. No dressage or jumping this month. When it is sunny, the forest and her colors are wonderfull. I'm working too on the ground with my 2 years old CC Skygrey Lady Spark. She is very sensitive and sweet, and she is a really beautifull curly mare, i don't stop to picture her with my camera ! Photo : my friend Emmanuelle Leboucher riding Ebony's Hedotsa at the bred show. Best wishes Sophie

| From Sophie: I finished the RAC verry happy ! I made an event this morning, a jumping with Tony. It was not very high (60 cm) but we are both "beginners" or not far in jumping. (I prefer dressage and trail lol). Tony jumped very well, he was just a little tired for the 2 last fences and jumped at trot, but all with a big heart ! It's a young horse. He never tried to stop, we had no faults. But a little slowly, then we was 8th. Thank you, thank you my dear curly ! Western riding the last sunday and jumping this sunday : our curlies are very versatile, isn't it !!? Care, Sophie |
