WHAT IS RAC?

As a way to encourage Curly Owners to get out and promote the breed, build a consistent 'riding ethic' and also inspire others, I decided to start a contest via Curly Horse Country, called RIDE-A-CURLY. I had no idea how it would be received, so I started by running just a 6 month contest to start. May 1- October 31, 2007.

It was the first of it's kind in that the focus was on working as a "TEAM" of promoters, inspiring each other and just having fun, rather than the "win." --- But like any contest, it is always fun to set some goals and have that ultimate prize as the driving force. ;-)

The RAC riders log daily and get points for time spent IN the saddle riding and also points for doing events as well. More details here.

Another really neat thing is, they were encouraged to share stories online via a page like this.

2007 RAC CHAMPIONS!
2007 RAC ADVENTURES
2008 winners to date!

This year, I have expanded the contest to 1 full year. Each participant was given a FREE Curly Tshirt with their entry fee of $30.00. They could pick any color they wanted and they had 2 design choices to choose from. They are encouraged to wear their Tshirts out in public as much as possible, to encourage conversation, promotion and also to give that "Team Spirit" feeling by pulling all the RAC riders together, no matter what Country, State, Providence or Town.

At the end of the year, riders turn in all the logs & points - these must be detailed and accurate. Prizes are awarded to 2 divisions: YOUTH & ADULT and to our RAC Grand Champion & Reserve Champion. (Prizes here)

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! Throughout the year, I will be holding 3 separate MINI contests to keep our RAC riders motivated! Those contests will be announced a bit later. Our first one will be in April.

In the meantime, encourage our riders by leaving a comment below. We hope their stories will inspire you to jump on the back of your horse and start promoting your curly as well!

Meet the 2008 Ride-A-Curly Team!

(Page 2)

It's time to meet some of the RAC riders, in no particular order. ;-)

Sheryl & Kristal D'Uva

Mother & Daugther Team! Sheryl & Kristal D'Uva

Kristal's goals are going to be: trying to make it to the State Fair this year with Girlfriend,  and  to have fun helping me get some more of our Curly's under saddle and promoted in our area.  We have a long hard road ahead as people in our area are AQHA/Paint/Appy people.  They are pretty close minded to other breeds.

Rick & Sheila Farstad

Husband & Wife Team! Sheila & Rick Farstad

From Sheila: My goal for 2008 is to do all the Smarter, Calmer, Braver Obstacle Course with our horses and have a get-together here at the farm for local riders to do the course too.  And that is to be comfortable at all the gaits.....right now I'm OK at the walk and slightly less OK at the trot but really nervous at the canter so that is my personal goal for this year to be OK at all the gaits!

From Rick: Rick's goal is to get in the saddle and ride....period.....he is such a busy man that instead of just doing the chores I want to see him getting out and enjoying the 'fruits' of his labour!  I know for me it really has put things back in perspective.

Severine

Severine helps us (Sheila & Rick above) with the horses but rides also for pleasure off the clock and would like to participate in RAC.  She is from Germany. She is also going to help me do the Smarter, Calmer, Braver Obstacle Course with our horses and have a get-together here at the farm for local riders to do the course too.

Lynn Downer My husband and I live in Stirling, Ontario and we are home to several wonderful Curlies of various ages.  My original goal for joining RAC was to get Thunder "out of retirement."  He and I participated in and won a FRP program in 2005 but in retrospect it did more harm than good.  We put in many miles together but they weren't productive miles.  My goal is now two fold with one component geared towards me and the other geared towards Thunder.  First, it is my goal to ride as many horses as I can with special emphasis on horses which don't belong to me.  Second, I want to expose Thunder to as many activities as I can to see what strikes his fancy.

Trish & Andrea Rosborough

Mother & Daughter Team! Trish & Andrea Rosborough

Trish: My goal is get more points than last contest and not finish last, lol.  Won't have greenies to ride this year so will be able to have longer rides.  I plan on eventing at least on of my horses next year.

Andrea: Involved in Pony Club, loves to jump, does PPG and really, really wants to do D rally this year (combined event).

Marie Sherwood

"I would like to be riding more and taking care of fewer chores.  Well, maybe I can settle for just riding more.  I would also love to start entering Dressage competitions.  I have set up a project called The Wanuskewin Project.  Native American children come to meet my curly horses and hear their incredible story.  We should have a group scheduled every week between April and June.  I would like to expand these events and give more children the opportunity to live their history.  It gives them such a sense of pride."

Erica Frei

My goal in the RAC is to help promote this wonderful breed! I have 5 wonderful Curlies of my own, and also train a number of Curlies for others. I invite anyone interested in keeping up with the goings on with my participation in the RAC to check out my website and blog regularly. I have 3 youngsters to start this year and they will be making the front page!

Laurie Bryan

I own 2 curlies both of whom were born at Betsy Lirakis' Top 'O The Hill Farm. My chestnut mare,Pyewacket, came directly from Betsy. She has a curly coat, a magical disposition and is a solid and fun trail horse. My other curly, Delphy, is a straight coat paint mare who also originated at Betsy's. She is young and still learning about the wonders of being out in the world. I'm lucky enough to live in a part of NH with lots of trails and dirt roads with easy access from my home. Trail riding is what I do with the curlies - I no longer do any showing. This year I hope to join a group that does organized trail and carriage ride/drives and participate in a couple of those. My goal at this point in life is to have a horse/s I can enjoy on the trail whether I'm out on my own or with others. Both my curlies have wonderful personalities and bring me tremendous happiness whether I'm riding them or just working with them around the barn. I'm entering RAC as an incentive for me to ride more and participate in some of the overnight ride/drives in the area. It will also be a way to connect with other curly owners and share experiences. It is a joy to take these horses out particularly with people who don't know about curlies - people are intrigued by their unusual coats and impressed by their steady way of going and personable dispositions. I've owned horses and ridden since I was 8 years old- in my 45 years of horse experience the curlies are the most entertaining, people oriented and sensible trail horses that I have worked with.
