WHAT IS RAC?
As a way to encourage Curly Owners to get out and promote the breed, build a consistent 'riding ethic' and also inspire others, I decided to start a contest via Curly Horse Country, called RIDE-A-CURLY. I had no idea how it would be received, so I started by running just a 6 month contest to start. May 1- October 31, 2007.
It was the first of it's kind in that the focus was on working as a "TEAM" of promoters, inspiring each other and just having fun, rather than the "win." --- But like any contest, it is always fun to set some goals and have that ultimate prize as the driving force. ;-)
The RAC riders log daily and get points for time spent IN the saddle riding and also points for doing events as well. More details here.
Another really neat thing is, they were encouraged to share stories online via a page like this.
This year, I have expanded the contest to 1 full year. Each participant was given a FREE Curly Tshirt with their entry fee of $30.00. They could pick any color they wanted and they had 2 design choices to choose from. They are encouraged to wear their Tshirts out in public as much as possible, to encourage conversation, promotion and also to give that "Team Spirit" feeling by pulling all the RAC riders together, no matter what Country, State, Providence or Town.
At the end of the year, riders turn in all the logs & points - these must be detailed and accurate. Prizes are awarded to 2 divisions: YOUTH & ADULT and to our RAC Grand Champion & Reserve Champion. (Prizes here)
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! Throughout the year, I will be holding 3 separate MINI contests to keep our RAC riders motivated! Those contests will be announced a bit later. Our first one will be in April.
In the meantime, encourage our riders by leaving a comment below. We hope their stories will inspire you to jump on the back of your horse and start promoting your curly as well!

Meet the 2008 Ride-A-Curly Team!
It's time to meet some of the RAC riders, in no particular order. ;-)
| Adria Halstead-Johnson |
I have 11 Curlies, live in Vermont, ride and drive. My goal in joining RAC is just that; to give me a goal, a reason to ride/drive more. It is far too easy for me with so many horses to simply take care of them every day. |

My goal for the 2008 RAC is to have a big trail with my husband and our two curlies Tony and Dotsy. It will be a 6 or 7 days trail before, and a show at the end and a meeting with around 1200 riders. The place of this meeting changes every year in France and the place for this time will be not too far from our home. It will be in july, you can read (see) more at http://equirando2008-chateaubri ant.com/_index.php
Other goals :make a show in sidesaddle with Tony or Dotsy. Try western riding for Tony... And have fun, lol !!!!! I have the pleasure to own 5 curlies and few foals every year ! Sadly, Tony will be for sale after this summer, because I would like to breed more working curly stockhorses and need for money. Fortunately we are keeping the perfect Tony's daugther for the RAC 2010 !!!" |

Sunny will be turning 5 this year, (eek! I can't believe it! is this what parents feel about their kids??) and some of my goals are:
1. Get his canter departure and leads correct
2. Take him on a trail ride with a water crossing
3. Create an absolutely crazy costume and ride him in our Halloween parade (or failing that, just through town in front of my friend's houses!)
4. Get him( and me!) in shape and take him on a all-day trail ride, just the 2 of us, checking out the countryside.
5. Ride in all of the shows that I can without the NAIS issue. (havn't figured that one out yet)
Goals for Koko: 1. Work to get him confident riding out alone
2. Take him to shows in gaited classes (possibly speed as well)
3. Have his gaits evaluated by a professional so I know what he's doing (that goes for Sunny too)
4. If possible, take him to lessons for sidesaddle and jumping.
Goals for Twister:
1. Teach him to move out under saddle
2. Train him to drive |

I have been a curly owner for over 12 years now, my first, an unbroken gelding that taught me the basics of curly horses. We have evolved into a first class breeding facility, selecting only the finest/most athletic/best personality lines of curly horses to advance our program. 2008 will afford me more time in the saddle, and what a great way to keep my motivation up, the CHC RAC contest! Did I mention, I am very competitive and hold a high standard of horsemanship for myself and those around me. |

I found my Curly mare, Dream, at a local Rescue in March 2007. She started training under saddle in May 2007. She's smart, and a cooperative student, so she was ridden in her first Dressdage show in Oct.2007 with scores in the 60's. I know we won't win, but our time together is very inmportant to me so it will be good to have it recognized for posterity! |

| Rachel Krawjck-Gatas |
Rachel has been riding and taking lessons for 4 years. She is becoming a gifted, elegant rider! The first time I saw her ride Dream I knew she was the one to show her for me. Dream is still very oriented to me only, but she will work with/for Rachel. They just started to teach Dream to canter under saddle, and Dream seems to be LOVING it! |

This year I would like to work on building Lakota's confidence in me while ridden, as well as more miles on the trail, and developing both of our confidence there.
... it is something Mandy and I can do together... and it helps fulfill her budding competitive spirit, that I do not share. |

Mandy is very excited, and can't wait to ride Jen. I'm sure we'll be spending a lot of time at a walk at first, and over some ground poles to help build up her topline and muscling, strength and stamina again. |

Husband & Wife Team! Carol & Tom Baldwin
About Carol: I am a retired educator. Wanting horses my whole life but burdened by extreme allergies, I learned about the curly horse in 1995. YES!!! My husband and I currently live in northern Michigan on 62 acres, own 4 curlies and we are having a blast. God is good!!!
About Tom: I'm a retired educator living in Northern lower MI with my wife Carol, 2 Golden Retreivers & 4 Curly Horses. We love the outdoors and are blessed to be in a rural area with miles of riding trails & 1000's of acres of State Forests. Our Curlies are young (6,5 & 4) and we've spent countless hours getting them ready to ride including professional training in the summer of 2007. There is nothing better for the soul than a 3 hour ride through God's Country. |

| Lesly Goetz-Jentz |
Lesly's entire family joined her in the RAC contest! When I get permission, I will post their profile as well. ;-)
I was breeding NSH's, purchased my first curly filly from Betsy Lirakis to cross for more substance and disposition and became HOOKED on curlies. Susan Lejonhud referred me to this competition, I purchased my third curly mare from her. Goals; to sell most my horses OTHER than the curlies--to then have time to promote, train, ride and breed my curlies. Have ridden since a little girl, didn't own a horse until 10 years ago. Now have 3 ABC curly mares, 1 ABC filly, 2 ICHO (pending) colts. All curly, 2 of the mares and the filly are extreme. Both the coming 2 and 3 y.o. colts have nice mane and tails (go that from their NSH sire!:~) Looking forward to this experience to ride and promote and blog with others about curlies. |

I've had my 5 year-old Curly gelding Sage for 3 years now and did most of his training myself. We do Parelli seven games and enjoy trail riding. I'm hoping to do 4 trail rides with him this year, which is ambitious considering how much trailering costs! If we get to any 4 events / outings I will be ecstatic!! I am also looking forward to cantering him for the first time and seeing him back in perfect health and soundness after a back strain last year. |

I'm the new owner of Spartacular Splashes, but I can'nt ride him, A friend, Sabine Vieyre, is working with him. I'm working with 3 another curlies mares.
I don't speak more english than Sabine, and we laugth a lot with our"french/glish", please laugth whith us !!
We take part of the RAC only for the love of CURLIES. My first goal
is not challange, NO ! only promote the FRENCH Curly's breeding.
Splashes will take part in some contests 2008, but in France it is
difficult to wear a red tee-shirt for the official contests! Thus
have a benefit from this pic, and a very beautifful year 2008 with
CURLY HORSES! January 19/08 THE FIRST OFFICIAL SHOW IN THE "HARAS NATIONAUX".
Various races of horses were presented in front of a intéresting public.
It was the first time, that a curly made this show in the southern
part of France.
After this show, Splashes was presented as a stallion, so that the
stud "Haras Nationaux"approuved him, for product, in 1/2 american blood, response in a few
months, if it's yes,
it will be marvelous for the french curlies!!!!!!!!!! |

I joined the RAC contest to share riding stories with my friends Betsy, Lesly and Laurie, to recognize my own personal riding accomplishments (as in finding time to ride and enjoy my Curly AhD), and to feel a part of the Curly horse community. My overall goal is to continue to regain my riding confidence and work together with AhD to become a better team - in other words to enjoy myself and have fun! More specific goals of mine for this year would include riding more with my four kids, trail rides with friends, riding AhD on the Maine coast AND on the carriage trails in Acadia National Park, and perhaps going to a natural horsemanship clinic or organized trail ride. My 2008 RAC riding is dedicated to my Dad, who bought me my first horse when I was twelve years old. Susan Lejonhud and AhD |

I am the owner of the most amazing curly boy, Billy. I use him only for trail riding and I could not ask for a better mount. I am looking forward to the challenge of the RAC. It is a wonderful way to stay motivated and inspired and showcase this incredible breed of horses. My personal goal for the 2008 year is to ride an average of 8 hours a week and continue to build a strong bond between Billy and myself. Hopefully, I will not have any setbacks this year! Thanks Denise for a fun program that unites curly owners from all over the WORLD!!! |
